I often read from Spike haters how the reason he is unredeemable is the AU in Seeing Red. Wonder why they don't seem to care about this:
Q:What is the legal age of consent to have sexual intercourse in California?
A: 18 years old. This means sexual contact with a minor under the age of 18 is illegal in the state of California even if the minor says it is consensual.
Buffy had turned 17 in that episode (Surprise). Even if Angel were a human male (an adult BTW) that would not have been legal in California where Sunnydale was located.
Now I'm not trying to stir up soup or even discuss the right/wrong of the age on their legal books but it is worth a thought at least given the hatred towards Spike for the ATTEMPTED act when Angel was legally guilty of the actual act (even though Buffy would argue I'm sure Joyce would have jumped on it had she been able to make a charge stick).
Angel was an older man (not even counting the vampire years) so the law would have made him register as a sex offender as well.

At one point in my life, I hated yogurt. For some reason, though, I kept thinking it was something I *should* like and so every once in a while, I'd give it a try... and then, one day not long after I turned 19, I got a sudden craving for yogurt. I picked some up at a store and it tasted wonderful! I've loved the stuff ever since.
There have been a few other things over the years, but the latest "change in taste" (and the thing that got me thinking about this) is sweet pickles. I've never liked them. Ever. And then about a month or so ago we were at a family gathering and there were some sweet pickles sitting out on a relish tray and for the first time in my life, they smelled really good. So I tried one... and I liked it. Not only that, but I've found myself craving them from time to time.
Seriously, what causes this? Because each time it's happened to me, it's been a fairly drastic change... something I pretty much hated turning into something I not only like, but crave. I'm also wondering if this happens to other people or if it's just my brain/taste buds that are weird.
It may have started as a national worldwide way to remember the sacrifices of World War One, but stop today to remember the veterans who have already passed and those who are part of our lives and thank them. It doesn't matter if you are a Democrat or Republican, Liberal or Tory. Remember and Honor them.
Today I remember my grandfather who served in World War II, a gentle man from Detroit who was stationed for part of the war, only 10 miles from where I currently live at Fort McCoy back in the day when it was still called Camp McCoy.
I remember my colleagues here at the clinic: three served as physicians in the Air Force and the Army, one was a physician's assistant in the Navy.
I remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield, those who died of other reasons and those who still live with the experiences of their tenure--both good and horrifying.
I remember veterans who walk among us, who are part of our online family such as
ginmar whose lives have changed because they were veterans.
And I pray for the safe return at the end of the month of my cousin Melissa who had to leave her 1 1/2 year old beautiful son to serve her first tour in Iraq as an Air Force ER physician.

beer_good_foamy.
May you always be loved and always be aware of how cherished you are. May you be respected and appreciated for all you are. May you find the inner peace that will take you through good and bad times. May you never have a day without laughter and love. May you have goals and a way to achieve them, hope and reason to believe! May you have joy always! Happy birthday!

( embeded tune under cut )
Why all the fuss about remembering something that started 95 years ago and lasted about four years? Why should other wars and warriors be remembered this day too? Why not make this a Monday holiday for a nice three day weekend (I've heard THAT more than once this week!)?

Tortures
Nothing has changed.
The body is susceptible to pain;
it has to eat and breathe the air, and sleep;
it has thin skin, and the blood is just beneath it;
an adequate supply of teeth and fingernails;
its bones can be broken; its joints can be stretched.
In tortures, all this is taken into account.
Nothing has changed.
The body shudders as it shuddered
before the founding of Rome and after,
in the twentieth century before and after Christ.
Tortures are just as they were, only the earth has grown smaller,
and what happens sounds as if it's happening in the next room.
Nothing has changed.
It's just that there are more people,
and beside the old offences new ones have sprung -
real, make-believe, short-lived, and non-existent.
But the howl with which the body answers to them,
was, is and ever will be a cry of innocence
according to the age-old scale and pitch.
Nothing has changed.
Except perhaps the manners, ceremonies, dances.
Yet the movement of hands to shield the head remains the same.
The body writhes, jerks and tries to pull away,
its legs fail, it falls, its knees jack-knife,
it bruises, swells, dribbles and bleeds.
Nothing has changed.
Except for the course of rivers,
the lines of forests, coasts, deserts and glaciers.
Amid those landscapes roams the soul,
disappears, returns, draws nearer, moves away,
a stranger to itself, elusive,
now sure, now uncertain of its own existence,
while the body is and is and is
and has nowhere to go.

Remembering all those who have lost their lives in war. In particular I would like to remember my school friend Ben Hyde who was killed in Iraq in 2003
"It takes twenty years or more of peace to make a man and takes only twenty seconds of war to destroy him."
~ King Baudouin I of Belgium in a speech to the U.S. Congress, May 12, 1959
On this day of remembrance, let us not forget for a moment the cost of our freedom, the price of war. It is something that must always be undertaken in sobriety, as a last resort and with a full understanding of the toll it takes and the hole that is never filled.

going to spam post when I get home including some thoughts on today but wanted to put the quote out there early enough as this day is one for the whole world.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
In Flanders fields. John McCrae, May 1915

Anthem for Doomed Youth
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells,
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,--
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of the boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

And the "Sad Shire" of Bulmer .
